Acupuncture & Fertility
Chinese Medicine has been successfully improving male and female fertility naturally for thousands of years (the earliest recorded acupuncture treatment for infertility date back to 11 AD).
These ancient techniques are now being used to support modern medicine, improving the success rate of assisted reproductive therapies such as invitro fertilization (IVF) and clomid.
In order to enhance fertility, preconception programmes are developed specifically to fit you and your partner’s requirements. Once you are pregnant, ongoing support is provided throughout the pregnancy, birth and postnatal period.
Preconception health programs involve acupuncture treatments, herbal medicine and general lifestyle changes to improve egg and sperm quality, regulate hormone levels, de-stress the body and restore general health and vitality. The healthier you are, the easier and healthier your pregnancy and baby will be.
In order to get your body into optimum shape for conception a three month pre-conception health program is recommended. During this time the focus is on improving general health and specifically enhancing the fertility of both partners.
For women, firstly addressing any diagnosed conditions (PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, ect). Secondly, regulating the menstrual cycle and ensuring the uterine (endometrial) lining is smooth and well nourished. Thirdly to improve ovarian function, encourage ovulation and improve egg quality. Finally, to encourage implantation of the fertilized egg and maintain pregnancy. For men, fertility enhancement focuses on improving sperm quality and quantity. I understand that this three month time frame may not suit everyone and will work with each client’s individual time frames. TCM will address the root reasons for difficulties with fertility maximizing your chances of conception both naturally and with IVF.
IVF & Assisted Reproduction
Research has shown Acupuncture can contribute not only to how you feel during your IVF cycle but may also contribute to your chance of success.
Acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer improves implantation rates. Acupuncture before and during the medication phase of IVF prepares the uterine lining and has been shown to improve hormone levels and may also improve pregnancy rates. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce anxiety levels associated with infertility and IVF. Acupuncture is effective in reducing IVF side effects. Acupuncture during the first few weeks of pregnancy is helpful for women who have had a history of infertility and/or miscarriage. Acupuncture has been shown to improve sperm morphology and motility.
Treatment plans are individually based, but usually consist of weekly treatments until symptoms have improved. In fertility terms this means regularity of the menstrual cycle, reduced pain, increased fertile mucous and increased healthy sperm. There should also be an improvement in general well-being.
Your specific treatment plan will be discussed at your first consultation.
